In a bid to support the less privileged during the holy month of Ramadan, the Sokoto State Government has expanded its Ramadan feeding program by increasing the number of designated feeding centers from 130 to 155. This initiative aims to ensure that more fasting Muslims, particularly the underprivileged, have access to nutritious meals to break their fast.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto made this announcement during the official inauguration of the 2025 Ramadan Feeding Committee at the Waziri Junaidu History and Culture Bureau in Sokoto. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing relief and assistance to vulnerable groups, emphasizing that the feeding initiative is a long-standing tradition in Sokoto.
“This initiative, originally introduced by Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, is designed to provide essential meals to the poor, the needy, and physically challenged individuals throughout Ramadan,” the governor stated.
Increased Access to Food and Resources
Governor Aliyu noted that in the previous year, 130 feeding centers and 300 additional locations served a variety of meals, including rice, chicken, beef, and fresh fruits, to thousands of people in need. With the expansion to 155 centers, the government aims to decongest existing sites, improve accessibility, and ensure that more fasting Muslims can receive food without overcrowding.
“By increasing the number of feeding centers, we are making it easier for more people to access meals, reducing long queues, and ensuring that food distribution is more efficient,” he explained.
Additional Support for Religious Leaders and Scholars
Beyond the expansion of feeding centers, the state government has also announced financial support for Islamic scholars and religious leaders, recognizing their role in guiding and educating the Muslim community. Under this initiative:
- 300 senior Islamic scholars will receive ₦200,000 each
- 100 Ulamas will receive ₦100,000 each
- 2,900 Malaman Zaure across the state’s 23 local government areas will receive ₦50,000 each
Additionally, the government has distributed 990 bags of maize to religious leaders, including Imams, Na’ibs, and Mu’adhins, in 90 Jum’at Mosques within Sokoto metropolis.
Call for Prayers and Community Support
Governor Aliyu urged residents to continue praying for the success of his administration, particularly in combating banditry and other criminal activities affecting the state. He also called on wealthy individuals, corporate organizations, and philanthropists to contribute by establishing additional feeding centers in their communities, thereby extending the impact of the program.
“This is a collective effort. I encourage well-meaning individuals to support this initiative and ensure that no fasting Muslim is left without food during Ramadan,” he added.
This expansion of the Ramadan feeding initiative underscores the Sokoto State Government’s commitment to social welfare and community development, ensuring that more people benefit from the generosity of the season.
